Abstract:
Quantity Surveyor is an important consultant who’s facing a number of challenges in the construction industry. Significant changes and challenges have been directly influencing to the Quantity Surveying profession at the present state of the construction field. This study is attempting to identify the challenges faced by Quantity Surveying professionals in Sri Lankan construction industry under mainly involved areas such as market competition, capability, relevance, and information and communication technology and to suggest recommendations to minimize the challenges faced by the Quantity Surveying profession.
The sample data was collected by distributing a questionnaire among the experienced Quantity Surveying professionals in Sri Lankan construction industry. The collected data was analysed quantitatively by using the averages calculated by relative index method. Through the analysis of data the researchers were able to find that increased competition from multinational organization which have to reduce the opportunities to work in the local market; lack of practical knowledge with the continuous development of the technology has severely affected the quantity surveyors and the lowest threat to the role of quantity surveyor has been identified by the technological advancement. Focusing on market competition by standardizing the role of Quantity Surveying with demarcations and improving knowledge on information technology related areas will able to minimize the severe challenges faced by the quantity surveyors in Sri Lanka.
