| dc.description.abstract | This study evaluates the preparedness of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) to face future demands in disaster response within the Sri Lankan context. Despite its primary role in national defence, the SLA has become a vital player in disaster management due to increasing natural and human-induced disasters. Using a mixed-method approach, the study collected data through semi-structured interviews with iS key personnel and structured questionnaires distributed to 150 SLA members across multiple field formations, including high-risk districts such as Colombo, Galle, and Ratnapura. Key strengths identified include the SLA’s structured coordination and rapid deployment capabilities. However, notable gaps were observed in resources, such as the lack of modern equipment—specifically mobile communication tools, portable power units, and specialised search and rescue gear—and insufficient specialised training for evolving disaster scenarios like urban floods and industrial accidents. The research further emphasises the need for improved inter-agency coordination and a comprehensive feedback system. Recommendations include adaptive training models, targeted investment in disaster-specific technologies, and enhanced collaboration mechanisms. The study offers practical insights into strengthening the SLA’s role in national disaster preparedness and contributes to broader military disaster management discourse. | en_US |
