WEAPONS OF SRI LANKA: FROM THE EARLIEST TIMES UP TO INDEPENDENCE

Abstract

From the ancient battlefields of Sri Lanka to the struggles for its independence, the weapons have shaped Sri Lanka’s Military Powers, cultural identity and technological innovations. While existing literature has shed light on various aspects of Sri Lankan weaponry, captivating gaps still remain. The strategic use of weapons in particular conflicts, their impact on social hierarchy and their role in shaping national identity require further exploration. Therefore, this study conducts a comprehensive examination of the weapons utilized in Sri Lanka throughout its history, spanning from the earliest times up to the independence of Sri Lanka in 1948. By analyzing relevant literature, archival research, and analysis of primary sources such as archaeological findings, inscriptions, and historical records, this study conducts qualitative research that aims to provide an overview of the evolution and development of weapons in Sri Lanka, their cultural and historical significance, and their impact on the country's military and political history. Additionally, the study will also reveal the role of weapons in shaping Sri Lanka's history, including its ancient kingdoms, colonial rule, and struggles for independence. This research endeavour contributes to a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka’s Military History, providing valuable insights for scholars, historians and those interested in the island nation’s journey towards self-determination and also it will shed light into an understanding of the cultural, social, and political significance of weapons in Sri Lanka and their impact on the country's history and development.
